Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth occurred on the 24th of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise when she was an infant. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could pursue her love for art literature and theater in the daytime. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay discovered through experience that art can be a powerful instrument to engage in social activism. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to convey messages via the medium of art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton for most of her youth, however she would spend every summer with her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by the summers she spent in Selma to later direct an documentary on King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received degrees in English as well as African American Studies. As in school, DuVernay became interested in producing for television journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to sit at the house of a member of the jury as well as look through their trash. In the course of her work she was dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the publicity business. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. In this role, she launched her own PR company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
